Certification

To achieve certification each website undergoes a manual technical compliance review against WCAG 2 to level AA.

The website underwent both a technical compliance audit and robust end to end testing by users with a wide range of disabilities including blind, low vision, dyslexia, colour blindness, mobility impairments, learning difficulties, Deaf, Asperger and anxiety and panic disorder.

All testing is carried out in line with relevant platform specific guidelines, and where applicable, conforms with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. Testing also conforms to Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Known Issues

We are aware of several outstanding accessibility issues within the cookie preferences modal, which is provided by a third-party supplier.
These issues include:

  • Dynamic updates to search results within the modal are not announced to screen reader users, meaning changes such as the number of vendors displayed may not be conveyed without additional navigation.
  • When the page is viewed at high levels of magnification or within a narrow viewport (for example, 320px wide), some content within the cookie modal is not fully accessible without scrolling in multiple directions.
  • Certain interactive controls within the modal, such as the options to switch between “User consent” and “Legitimate interest”, are built using non-semantic elements and do not correctly communicate their role, state, or interactivity to assistive technologies.
  • Some non-interactive elements, including headings and paragraphs, have been added to the keyboard tab order unnecessarily, which can make keyboard and screen reader navigation more difficult and time-consuming.
  • Heading structures within the modal are not always logical or consistent, which may affect how screen reader users understand the relationships between sections.
  • Some visually presented lists are not marked up programmatically as lists, meaning the same structure and meaning are not available to users of assistive technologies.

In addition, advertisements displayed on the site are delivered by third-party providers. The Financial Times do not have direct control over the content, behaviour, or underlying mark-up of these advertisements, and as a result some ad content may not fully meet accessibility standards.

These issues are outside of The Financial Times direct control, but they are actively engaging with third-party providers to raise them and seek improvements.
